Chapter 12

Volunteering viper

We spent an hour with Finn, making a fireproof pen in Vorana’s backyard for the baby. When the hatchling was secured and fast asleep, and Sage put on guard duty outside, we had to go our separate ways for work. But during our first break, we went suspect hunting. There may be a baby dragon to take care of, but there was still a killer on the loose, and we sought a suspect to grill.

I sat on Zandra’s shoulder as she drove along the main street, looking for signs of Percival and his camera. It wasn’t the safest position, but it gave me an excellent vantage point.

“It is curious why he’s still here,” Zandra said. “Dawn could have a point. He needs to stay around to cover his tracks and make sure no one is looking at him for the crime.”

“Or he’s still working. He could have another job,” I said.

“What’s worth filming in Crimson Cove?”

I inspected the tidy storefronts. “It’s a pleasant enough town. I’ve always considered it up and coming. But so long as he doesn’t catch accidental footage of baby dragons, that’s all I care about.”

“Don’t care too much. We’re not keeping her.” Zandra’s tone left no room for negotiation.

“I know! I want to make sure she’s happy, though.”

“We have to act fast with this dragon issue. Rumors spread quickly, and if anyone learns Vorana’s got a baby dragon in her backyard, we’ll be in trouble. And when the dragons arrive and claim what’s theirs, there’ll be nothing we can do to stop them. Not even you.”

I inspected a paw. “I wouldn’t say that.”

“Yeah? You’re a dragon slayer, now?”

“When needs must. But I prefer to negotiate rather than slay them. Although I fear Finn isn’t above fighting a dragon. He didn’t want to leave the hatchling this morning.”

“And he only did because I pushed him on what he’d tell Cythera about missing work. It’s not like he can ask for parental leave to take care of his newborn.” Zandra slowed the van, and we studied a guy with a sturdy pot belly. It wasn’t Percival.

I leaned against her head. “We’ll watch over Finn and make sure he does nothing too foolish.”

We stopped outside Sorcha’s café and went in to grab food. The place was bustling with regulars, and the delectable scent of frying sausage drifted in the air. Zandra chatted with Sorcha while I inspected the menu. It was full of delicious meaty goodness. Just what a growing cat needed.

“Stop drooling. I know where Percival is.” Zandra headed to the door, carrying a brown paper bag.

I followed her, and we climbed into the van. “Sorcha’s gossip grapevine is working again?”

“Like a charm. Percival is at the beach!”

We drove the short distance to the pebbled beach, and Zandra parked.

“I recognize that van,” she said. “I parked next to it at the sanctuary. It belongs to Percival.”

We climbed out and headed to the boardwalk. Percival stood with his camera on his shoulder as he took panoramic shots of the beach, the waves hissing gently along the stones, leaving behind a bubbly foam.
